The pug is a toy dog with a wrinkly (Bull dog like) , short-muzzled face and curled tail. The breed has a fine, glossy coat that comes in a variety of color, although often fawn, apricot fawn, silver fawn, or black and a compact square body with well-developed muscles. Their body structure changed over time. In its present form the breed was imported in the Europe from China in 1572 by the Dutch East India company,
The pug is also known by other names as Chinese pug, Dutch bulldog, Dutch mastiff, Mini mastiff, Mops, Carlin etc. Pugs' legs are strong willed, light weight ( ideally 8 - 10 Kg when fully grown), short height ( 8" - 10" leg to back) and of moderate length ( 18" - 24"). The Original Pugs were long legged, but with repeated hybridisation the size had been reduced by the Chinese.
Since pugs lack longer snouts and prominent skeletal brow ridges, they are susceptible to eye injuries. They also have compact breathing passageways, leaving many prone to breathing difficulties or unable to efficiently regulate their temperature through evaporation from the tongue by panting. A pug's normal body temperature is between 36 - 39°C. If this temperature rises to 42 °C, oxygen demand is greatly increased and immediate cooling is required and can even lead to organ failure.
Pugs that live a mostly sedentary life can be prone to obesity and thus abnormal functioning of the hip socket. This is regulated keeping the weight below 10 Kg through regular exercise and a healthy diet. The median life span of pugs is 10 years.
